One of the most common questions we’re asked is whether it’s better to buy new or used household appliances. The short answer is: it depends! On many factors (see below). If you’re considering buying your partner or family member a household appliance for Christmas or another holiday, this might complicate our answer. But keep reading to find out more…
One of our many services, among installing, repairing, and maintaining both new and used household appliances, is offering used appliance sales to our happy customers. Buying new appliances for your home can be the facelift your house needs, but we know that financially, it’s not always possible to buy new. This is why we offer sales on used appliances, and you can trust the appliances that we screen to re-sell. Buying used appliances can be advantageous for many reasons. You can save an average of 50% on your appliance when compared to the retail price. You can trust us – we test, repair, clean, and retest every appliance that we sell, and we’ll even repaint your appliance to get rid of chipped paint or rust spots.
So, what are the advantages and disadvantages of buying used appliances? To start, you can negotiate the price when you buy used. You can’t always negotiate the price of a new appliance, because there are restrictions on what associates can and can’t sell an appliance for. But when you buy used, the salesperson may be more open to negotiations. That being said, when you buy an appliance used, there’s no warranty to protect your purchase like there is with a new appliance.
You might get lucky and find that used appliances are not really used! You could buy a “used” oven that was a floor model in a big name store, or a brand-new refrigerator that wouldn’t fit in a previous buyer’s home. When you buy an appliance from someone’s home, you can expect more use, but in some cases when you buy used, your appliance hasn’t actually been used much (or at all). The disadvantage to this is that it might be difficult to find a matching suite. If you score a used refrigerator that’s only slightly used, you may have a tough time finding a matching range and dishwasher.
If you’re planning to buy a household appliance used, you might also consider hiring a professional to evaluate your appliance. Trust us – this is an expense that’s worth it, because think of the money you’ll save in the long run by buying used! The downside to buying used is that you may have to arrange your own delivery. This can be tricker with larger appliances. When you buy new, consider all the added costs, and figure out if you’re really getting a deal.
